In 1988, I injured my lower back while twisting to lift my one-year old daughter out of her car seat. For nearly 10 years, I suffered from pain every morning and intermittently at other times. I used aspirin heavily to alleviate the pain.
I asked my M.D. about this many times and he gave me muscle relaxants in 1996 which, of course, made the pain transparent but did not fix the problem. Once off the relaxants, the pain persisted. By mid-1996, I had been referred to an orthopedic surgeon who, through an x-ray, confidently recommended lower back surgery as the only course of action to solve the problem. I knew this was an extreme and risky solution and mentioned this to a another M.D. who is a friend and practices in another area of medicine. He relayed stories about a doctor, Todd Frisch, who had treated him and others he knew. He strongly recommended seeing Dr. Frisch before I proceeded with any other medical professionals.
In my first appointment with Dr. Frisch, he discussed the problem extensively with me and narrowed the diagnosis down to two possible problems. He tested for each and in a short period of time determined clearly the specific problem and course of action. He recommended 8 to 12 acupuncture treatments and a dietary change to lower my body's acidic levels. Skeptical, but willing to pursue a less invasive solution, I agreed to move forward. By the eighth or ninth treatment, my lower back was healed completely and I have lived a very active life, playing each day with active children, I have run the Chicago marathon, and play basketball and engage in other active sports at least four or five times each week. None of this would have been possible without solving the problem or if I had agreed to the type of surgical procedure that had been recommended by the orthopedic surgeon.
I have recommended Dr. Frisch enthusiastically to many people and the feedback has been all positive. I am grateful for his candor, holistic approach, willingness to send me to other doctors, and the terrific results he has provided for me, my family and friends.
